Reasons for Seeking Christian Counseling

When you realize you may need counseling, it feels overwhelming. It takes time to sort through endless profiles and figure out what type of counselor is the right fit. Many people begin by filtering for what matters most to them, and a counselor’s faith is often an important factor.

Sometimes this is because you want your struggles understood through a Biblical lens. You may hope to receive guidance that aligns with God’s Word.

If you are not looking for Christian based counseling, that is completely okay. Our licensed counselors are available to meet with you and help you work toward your counseling goals. If you are unsure whether you want faith integrated, we encourage you to talk about this with your counselor. You can do this during your first appointment and ask questions so you can make an informed decision.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

What to Expect at Joshua Tree

The statement below summarizes important aspects of the Christian faith and the beliefs held by the counselors at Joshua Tree.

We believe mankind was created by God and is deeply loved by Him, and that God created the earth and all its inhabitants (Genesis 1:1). Our team believes the Bible, all 66 books, is the living Word of God, written by human authors under the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). Additionally, we believe Scripture tells the story of how sin entered the world and separated us from God, and how God wove His plan of salvation throughout history so we could be restored into relationship with Him (Romans 6:23).

Last but not least, believe salvation and eternal life are free and available to anyone, regardless of the life they have lived or the choices they have made, because God offers salvation by grace, not by works. As Scripture says:

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Romans 10:9–10 (NIV)

Therefore...

We believe in the Trinity, God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God the Father, through whom all things were made, sent His Son, Jesus. Jesus was sent to die on the cross to pay the price for sin that we cannot atone for. We believe Jesus was raised from the dead and ascended into heaven. Jesus offers salvation and eternal life to all who receive His gift (John 3:16–17; John 10:30; John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Romans 5:8). When you receive Jesus as the Lord of your life, you also receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps you respond to God, turn from sin, and grow into the life God has for you (John 14:16). We strive to live by faith and use the spiritual gifts God gives His people (Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:8–10, 28–30; Ephesians 4:11).

We realize our beliefs may differ from what some people refer to as Christianity. If so, we want you to know this. Regardless of our personal beliefs, as licensed professionals we follow our ethical code in how faith is integrated into counseling. We only integrate faith when it is the client’s preference, and even then only to the degree the client is comfortable with.

If we differ in beliefs, that is okay. Our licensed counselors would still be honored to support you on your healing journey, without judgment, bias, or pressure. We are committed to offering services with integrity and high ethical standards.
