starting with Counseling at Joshua Tree

Beginning your healing journey is a courageous step—and we’re here to make it as clear, empowering, and simple as possible. At Joshua Tree, we believe that the therapeutic relationship is central to successful counseling. That’s why we invite you to take the lead in choosing the therapist who feels like the best fit for you.

Step 1: Explore Our Therapists

We encourage you to browse our team to get a sense of who might resonate with you. Moreover, each therapist at Joshua Tree has:

  • A brief profile to give you a quick overview

  • A detailed profile to help you get a deeper sense of their focus and personality

  • A link to their full website, where you can learn more about their unique approach, specialties, and how they work

In short, choosing a therapist you feel drawn to increases the chance of a meaningful connection and lasting results. You’re not alone in this process—but you do get to start it in a way that honors your intuition.

FAQs About Getting Started

Do I need a referral?
No. In fact, you can request an appointment directly—no referral required.

What if I’m unsure who to choose?
If you’re not sure which therapist is the right fit, we recommend reading through a few profiles and noticing who you feel most drawn to. You can also email us for light guidance—but ultimately, we’ve found the best matches happen when clients choose for themselves.

Is my information secure?
Yes. Specifically, all scheduling, paperwork, and communication happens through a HIPAA-compliant secure platform.

Can I book counseling for someone else?
It depends:

  • For minors: Parents or legal guardians can book for their child. If parents are divorced, legally separated, or never married, both parents must sign consent for treatment. If parents are married, only one signature is required.

  • For couples counseling: One partner may schedule the appointment. However, both partners must e-sign the consent to treatment at least 24 hours before the first session or we will cancel the appointment.

  • For another adult: No—you cannot book on behalf of another adult, even if you intend to pay for their therapy. The adult client must initiate the request themselves using their own name and email address. Afterward, you may become a third-party payor.

Can I pay for someone else’s counseling?
Yes. You can pay for another person’s counseling by signing a Third Party Payor Agreement and putting your credit card on file. Keep in mind:

  • You will not have access to any personal information or updates about the client’s care.

  • We will charge your card for no-shows or late cancellations unless you make other arrangements with us in advance.

  • If interested, contact our Practice Manager for details about how to set this up.

Can I be invoiced for sessions?

No. Instead, fees are due at the time of service, and we require a credit card to remain on file. However, if you prefer not to use a card, we can make an exception by arranging prepayment by check for a specific number of sessions. In that case, please reach out to our practice manager so she can help you set this up.

What if I change my mind after booking my first appointment?

Once your initial appointment has been accepted, you can cancel directly in the client portal. If you decide not to proceed, contact our Practice Manager to request removal of your card on file.

What if I want to switch therapists after booking?
We want you to feel at home with your therapist. If you decide you’d like to see someone else, just reach out to our practice manager, Kelly, and she’ll help you make the change:
