Reasons for Seeking Christian Counseling

When you realize you’re in need of counseling, it can be daunting to search through endless profiles and try to figure out what type of a counselor you need. It’s common to sort available counselors by things that are most important to you; a person’s faith is often one of the most important aspects in the search for a counselor. Sometimes this is because you want your struggles to be viewed through a Biblical lens and wish to receive guidance in accordance with God’s Word. Other times, it isn’t that you necessarily want prayer and Scripture integrated into counseling but you want the assurance that your counselor has the same foundational beliefs as you. Maybe you find yourself in a faith crisis or you’ve been wounded by people who profess to be Christians. Perhaps you were raised in a Christian home but felt it was too legalistic. Whether the Christian faith is your greatest asset or the thing that has most wounded you, if you are looking for a counselor who identifies as a Christian, we hope you’ll read the team bios of our licensed and pastoral counselors to see if you feel like one may be a good fit. If you don’t want Christian-based counselor, no worries! Our licensed counselors are ready to meet you and help you towards your counseling goals. If you aren’t sure whether or not you want faith-based counseling, we encourage you to discuss this with the counselor of you choosing at the first appointment and ask questions to help you make an informed deicsion.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

What to Expect at Joshua Tree

The statement below is a summary of some important aspects of the Christian faith and beliefs held by the counselors at Joshua Tree.

We believe that mankind is created and beloved by God, as was the Earth and all its inhabitants (Genesis 1:1). We believe that the Bible, all 66 books, is the living word of God – written by man as inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16). We believe that the Bible tells the story of how sin entered the world and separated us from God and how he wove the plan of salvation throughout history so we could be restored into a relationship with Him (Romans 6:23). We believe that salvation and eternal life is free and available to anyone regardless of the life they’ve lived or choices they’ve made because God offers this by grace and not works. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)

We believe in the Trinity: God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God the Father, through whom all things come, sent his son Jesus to die on a cross to pay the price for the sin for which we cannot by ourselves atone, to be raised from the dead and ascend into heaven to prepare a place for all those who choose to receive his gift of salvation and eternal life (John 3:16-17; John 10:30; John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Romans 5:8). When you accept Jesus into your heart and as the Lord of your life, you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit who helps you to respond to God in ways that you away turn from sin and towards the life God has you (John 14:16). We strive to live out of faith and use our spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; 28-30, and Ephesians 4:11).

We realize that this may differ from what some refer to as Christianity. If so, we want you to know that regardless of our beliefs, as licensed professionals we adhere to our code of ethics regarding the integration of faith into counseling, only doing so when this is the client’s preference and choice and even then only to the degree to which the client is comfortable. If we differ about beliefs, that’s okay! Our licensed counselors would still love the opportunity to help you on your healing journey – without judgement, bias, or any religious weirdness. We strive to offer all services with integrity and high ethical standards.
